Yusuf and the Truth
A sample for Yusuf, age 6 · on Honesty
One afternoon, Yusuf was bouncing his ball indoors, even though Mama had asked him to play outside. Thump! The ball knocked Mama’s favourite blue vase off the shelf, and it broke into pieces on the floor. Yusuf froze. His heart was beating fast. He looked at the broken pieces, then at the door. No one had seen him. He could quietly sweep them under the sofa, and maybe Mama would think the wind had knocked the vase over all by itself. But a small voice inside him remembered something important: Allah is always near, watching over us even when no one else can see. And Allah loves a child who tells the truth. Yusuf knew that hiding what he had done would sit heavy in his chest all day long. So he took a deep breath and walked slowly to the kitchen, carrying the broken pieces carefully in his hands. “Mama,” he said softly, “I broke your vase. I was playing inside, and I’m very sorry.” Mama knelt down and looked at him — not with anger, but with a gentle smile. “Thank you for telling me the truth, Yusuf. A vase can always be mended or replaced,” she said, “but an honest heart is more precious than anything on that shelf.” Then, side by side, they swept up the pieces together. That night, Yusuf slept soundly. Telling the truth had felt hard for just a moment — but afterwards his heart felt light, and clean, and close to Allah.
